Unisex Perfume Gifts for Christmas

For anyone buying a Christmas perfume gift who would rather choose by style than by a for-him or for-her label, or who is buying for a couple to share.

Nine perfumes in our catalogue are marketed as unisex, and they range from under £20 to several hundred pounds. Because they are not sold as for him or for her, the useful question for a Christmas gift is style: fresh and light, or warm and sweet. This report groups them that way and explains what each one is built on.

Prices below are typical UK retail prices we checked in October 2026, taken from the lowest listed price for each perfume. They may change, so check the retailer for today's price before buying.

What we looked at

We took every perfume in our catalogue that is marketed as unisex, grouped them by the style their published note pyramids describe, and added the typical UK price ranges we recorded at retailers in October 2026. We did not wear-test them, survey buyers or use sales data, so the groups reflect note structure and price, not popularity.

Quick picks

Finding: fresh and light unisex scents are the easiest to share

Wood Sage & Sea Salt, Gypsy Water and Silver Mountain Water are built on sea salt and sage, citrus and pine, or bergamot and green tea. None of them is sweet or heavy, which makes them easier to give when you are unsure of someone's taste.

Finding: warm, sweet unisex scents suit winter

Tobacco Vanille, Lost Cherry and Baccarat Rouge 540 use tobacco and vanilla, cherry and almond, or saffron and amberwood. All three start well above £100.

Finding: one dry, woody option

Oud Wood combines rosewood, cardamom and pepper with oud, sandalwood and vetiver over a tonka and amber base. It is spicier and drier than the warm group above.

Finding: two lower-priced options follow the warm style

Maison Alhambra Baroque Rouge 540 and Tobacco Touch list note pyramids similar to Baccarat Rouge 540 and Tobacco Vanille, at typical ranges of £14 to £20 depending on size and £20 to £30 depending on size. Similar notes do not make them identical scents.

The perfumes in detail

Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt

Notes: top Ambrette; heart Sea Salt; base Sage.

Wood Sage & Sea Salt has a very short pyramid: ambrette, sea salt and sage. It is light, mineral and easy to wear. Downside: it is sold as a cologne and its listed seasons are spring and summer, so it is a quieter choice for a winter gift. Typically £58 to £125 depending on size.

Byredo Gypsy Water

Notes: top Bergamot, Lemon, Pepper, Juniper; heart Incense, Pine Needles, Orris; base Amber, Vanilla, Sandalwood.

Gypsy Water opens with bergamot, lemon, pepper and juniper, moves to incense, pine needles and orris, and settles on amber, vanilla and sandalwood. It is fresh on top with a soft, slightly warm base. Downside: its typical range of £150 to £225 depending on size puts it in the luxury bracket. Typically £150 to £225 depending on size.

Creed Silver Mountain Water

Notes: top Bergamot, Mandarin; heart Green Tea, Black Currant; base Musk, Petitgrain, Sandalwood, Galbanum.

Silver Mountain Water pairs bergamot and mandarin with green tea and blackcurrant over musk, petitgrain, sandalwood and galbanum: cool, clean and citrus-led. Downside: it is one of the most expensive scents here, and its listed seasons are spring and summer. Typically £220 to £310 depending on size.

Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille Eau de Parfum

Notes: top Tobacco Leaf, Spicy Notes; heart Vanilla, Cacao, Tonka Bean, Tobacco Blossom; base Dried Fruits, Woody Notes.

Tobacco Vanille is tobacco leaf and spice over vanilla, cacao, tonka bean and tobacco blossom, with dried fruits and woods in the base. It is rich and sweet and suits cold weather. Downside: it is dense, so it is best for someone who already likes warm, heavy scents. Typically £145 to £320 depending on size.

Tom Ford Lost Cherry Eau de Parfum

Notes: top Black Cherry, Cherry Liqueur, Bitter Almond; heart Sour Cherry, Plum, Turkish Rose, Jasmine Sambac; base Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Cinnamon, Peru Balsam, Sandalwood, Benzoin, Cedar, Vetiver.

Lost Cherry is black cherry, cherry liqueur and bitter almond, then sour cherry, plum, rose and jasmine sambac, over a long base of vanilla, tonka, cinnamon, balsam and woods. Downside: it is very sweet and cherry-led, and its typical range of £180 to £395 depending on size is high. Typically £180 to £395 depending on size.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum

Notes: top Saffron, Jasmine; heart Amberwood, Ambergris, Hedione; base Fir Resin, Cedar, Ambroxan, Oakmoss.

Baccarat Rouge 540 lists saffron and jasmine, then amberwood, ambergris and hedione, over fir resin, cedar, ambroxan and oakmoss. It is warm but airy and its listed seasons cover the whole year. Downside: its typical range of £170 to £525 depending on size is the widest in our catalogue. Typically £170 to £525 depending on size.

Tom Ford Oud Wood

Notes: top Rosewood, Cardamom, Sichuan Pepper; heart Oud, Sandalwood, Vetiver; base Tonka Bean, Vanilla, Amber.

Oud Wood is rosewood, cardamom and Sichuan pepper over oud, sandalwood and vetiver, finishing with tonka bean, vanilla and amber. It is dry, spicy and woody. Downside: oud is not to everyone's taste, and it has one of the highest starting prices here. Typically £230 to £320 depending on size.

Maison Alhambra Baroque Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum

Notes: top Saffron, Jasmine; heart Amberwood, Ambergris; base Fir Resin, Cedar.

Baroque Rouge 540 lists saffron and jasmine, amberwood and ambergris, and fir resin and cedar, a shorter version of the Baccarat Rouge 540 pyramid. Downside: it is sold in one 100 ml size, and it is similar to the original, not the same scent. Typically £14 to £20 depending on size.

Maison Alhambra Tobacco Touch Eau de Parfum

Notes: top Tobacco Leaf, Spicy Notes; heart Vanilla, Cacao, Tonka Bean, Tobacco Blossom; base Dried Fruits, Woody Notes.

Tobacco Touch lists the same notes as Tobacco Vanille: tobacco leaf and spice, vanilla, cacao, tonka and tobacco blossom, and dried fruits and woods. Downside: it is sold in one 80 ml size, and matching note lists do not guarantee it smells or lasts the same. Typically £20 to £30 depending on size.

The verdict

If you do not know the recipient's taste, a fresh scent such as Wood Sage & Sea Salt or Gypsy Water is the lower-risk choice on paper. If they already like warm, sweet scents, Tobacco Vanille or Baccarat Rouge 540 fit the season better.

For a smaller budget, Baroque Rouge 540 and Tobacco Touch follow the two best-known warm styles at a fraction of the price, with the trade-offs noted above.

How to choose

  1. Unisex is a marketing label, not a scent style: choose by the notes the person already enjoys.
  2. For a couple, a fresh or airy scent is usually easier to share than a very sweet one.
  3. Several of these come in small 30 ml sizes, which keeps the cost down for a first try; compare the price per millilitre.

Questions

What makes a perfume unisex?

Only how it is marketed. Notes such as citrus, woods, amber and vanilla appear in perfumes sold to men, women and both.

Which unisex perfume is the safest gift?

There is no universal answer, but fresh, light scents are generally less divisive than very sweet or very dark ones.

Are the lower-priced options the same as the originals?

No. Their published notes are similar, but similar notes do not mean an identical scent, longevity or quality.
